Well, it's August and I've been slacking off in the blog department, but let me tell you, that's the only place I've been slacking off. In my last post I updated all the arty projects I'd been working on, including the Merfolk swap with <a href="http://www.retrocafeart.com/">Retro Cafe Art Gallery</a>. I finally got all 4 of my Merfolk completed and off to Kristin just in the nick of time.</div>

Here they are, having arrived at <a href="http://www.retrocafeart.com/">Retro Cafe Art Gallery</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
During all of this, I was also preparing for my Mom's 80th birthday celebration. I made all the invitations and got them mailed out, then I worked on centerpieces. Most of my Tweety candy boxes from Easter were still with me and since they were done in pastel shabby chic colors, I decided they would be great for "favors" and table decorations. To add to them, I took the plastic containers that Crystal Light powdered drink mixes come in and made them into more candy boxes. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We held Mom's party at <a href="http://www.farinaswinery.com/">Farina's Winery and Cafe</a> in Grapevine. Carol and I figured Grapevine was a good central location between Fort Worth, Dallas and McKinney where most of us live. Farina's in Grapevine has an antique store next door to it that they own as well and we rented the antique store for the birthday party and luncheon. </div>

Now that the partying is over and Merfolk completed and swapped, my desk is clean and clear. What am I going to do now? Kristin at <a href="http://www.retrocafeart.com/">Retro Cafe Art Gallery</a> has hinted at a Halloween Tombstone swap and I'm anxiously awaiting word on that one. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Meanwhile, I'm going to do some sewing and make a few things just for the heck of it. We've had a cool spell (for Texas in the summer) but the triple digit temps are heading back this week, so I'll be staying inside dreaming up projects and making art.</div>

Until next time, everyone stay fabulous!</div>

Let another month swoosh by me without a new post. Seriously, can time just slow down a bit?<br />
<br />
I've been working on several art projects lately. <a href="http://www.retrocafeart.com/">Retro Cafe Art</a> is having a Mermaid Swap! Kristin just keeps on creating the best things ever and my art supply budget is seriously busted!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVA08NHI3FPufAPzRNaqfQUYTVHniuCppzMcTmyhgSCSPOn-qmUlUgiUSVQ34QCwJ8SH_EO0IWJTVThyphenhyphenEJHEhhfRIKVymwDVhPomK8q8abKQBGyZqvfoFNhekMQWTt0-CB8OH0D7gELyU/s1600/Mermaid+%231.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVA08NHI3FPufAPzRNaqfQUYTVHniuCppzMcTmyhgSCSPOn-qmUlUgiUSVQ34QCwJ8SH_EO0IWJTVThyphenhyphenEJHEhhfRIKVymwDVhPomK8q8abKQBGyZqvfoFNhekMQWTt0-CB8OH0D7gELyU/s1600/Mermaid+%231.jpg" height="400" width="290" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's the first Mermaid. I have another one complete, but am having a hard time getting a good picture because she is so shiny! Mermen are now in the works.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Also in the works (constantly) is my Art Journal. Truthfully, though, I really should call it my Art Book because there is very little journal-ing going on.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And here I am wearing it. Can you believe that Kristin actually used this picture of me wearing it (along with the picture above this one) in her newsletter AND on her Retro Cafe Art Facebook page? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
She also used my Compass Angel in her newsletter and her Facebook pages for Retro Cafe Art and Coffee Break Designs. I feel all so famous and stuff!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Well, as you can tell, I haven't been sitting around twiddling my thumbs! Along with all the artwork, I have recently joined Oak Cliff Christian Church. I am singing in the choir and have just attended my first CWF meeting/luncheon. Oak Cliff Christian Church is a Disciples of Christ (not to be confused with Church of Christ) congregation. Think TCU. TCU is a Disciples university, just like SMU is a Methodist university. Growing up, my family attended a Disciples of Christ church and it's good to be back with them. Since this is such a small congregation, this year Vacation Bible School will just be 2 days, this Friday and Saturday. I've volunteered to help out with arts and crafts. I mean, what else, right? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So I'm off for now (some may say I'm "off" all the time) and I'll try, try, try to not let another whole month go by before I post again.</div>

WooHoo!<br />
<a href="http://twocraftyscrappers.blogspot.com/2014/05/april-blog-challenge-winner.html">http://twocraftyscrappers.blogspot.com/2014/05/april-blog-challenge-winner.html</a><br />
On the blog they posted "by Victoria" instead of "by Virginia", but what the heck, it's my creation and I've been called worse! I called to "claim" my prize, but Gena isn't in and is off for a few days and Anita, who runs the Monthly Challenge wasn't there either. I left my name and number and hopefully someone will get back with me soon. <br />
<br />
I'll even volunteer to go pick up my prize at the store (evil grin) in case there is something else there I can't live without - other than the whole dang store!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This months challenge over at The Crafty Scrapper blog is to use black (and black ink doesn't count). Most of the entries so far are scrapbook layouts, but the challenge is for a layout or other project.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I started out doing scrapbooking, but that quickly metamorphicised into mixed media projects. Since I was in the store yesterday, I asked if I could submit something other than a layout just to be sure and was given a very enthusiastic "yes".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So here you go. I will link this to The Crafty Scrapper blog:</div>

It's been a couple of weeks since I posted here, so I thought I'd bring everyone up to date on what's happening. (Not a lot.)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was invited to participate in a discussion group about craft storage at Michael's Corporate Office. I've done a focus group there before, and since they offer a Michael's gift card for your time, I said, "Heck, yea. Count me in." So the discussion group was today at 10am over at one of their buildings in Irving, Texas. There were nine of us participating at of that nine, five were Michael's employees. That's not counting the employee running the discussion group and the other three of four who hovered in the background taking notes. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anyway, they asked stuff about what we needed in storage, what we'd like to see, if we liked colors (most said no) and how much we would pay for some items they are proposing to sell. I'm cheap. I couldn't afford any of their stuff now unless it was half price.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In the course of discussion, we all discovered what each considered our "main" craft and if we had dedicated craft rooms, etc. Almost all of the gals (and one gentleman) had a dedicated room and most of them must live in fancy houses with all the nice craft furniture from what I could tell. Lordy, they would be horrified if they was where I work! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anyway, I certainly hope I get another invite to a Michael's group in the future. I went straight to the store and used my gift card and my 40% coupon!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On other fronts, with Easter fast approaching, I've concluded working on Easter crafts. I was sorely disappointed that two of my three Tweety Candy Boxes didn't sell, but that's OK. I'll have them for decorations next Easter!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Do you have a pile of craft projects just sitting around staring at you? I do. I've got a lot of cool things I've ordered from Retro Cafe Art to make, but haven't done them because I'm afraid of messing them up. Am I the only one with this problem? I ordered a couple of Articulated Santos Cage Doll kits and both a medium and a large 3-D Articulated Santos Cage Doll Kit. I finally got brave enough and dove in and made up one of the "flat" dolls. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY-Jp7HYts7UX13KEzGIyjBUNdoxxncZDUJVLxW6V4GMnyvHqZ-VxbFojOUWsSY34phvJ3bdhsTtUuqCMyqfXZSbw5k_vqR_hJOpC9C1LOofo1upGvWl_fd5tYU94q7vm5RQ2hjrDLVOc/s1600/Santos+Doll.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY-Jp7HYts7UX13KEzGIyjBUNdoxxncZDUJVLxW6V4GMnyvHqZ-VxbFojOUWsSY34phvJ3bdhsTtUuqCMyqfXZSbw5k_vqR_hJOpC9C1LOofo1upGvWl_fd5tYU94q7vm5RQ2hjrDLVOc/s1600/Santos+Doll.jpg" height="640" width="355" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I think she turned out really well, so now I feel brave enough to make another one. It may take some time before I'm up to tackling the 3-D dolls. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Several weeks ago, I went to The Crafty Scrapper in Waxahachie and met my Facebook friend, Melissa Hines. After browsing in the store and purchasing a "few" things we went off to her house and had a wonderful time in her craft room. She showed me some techniques and I showed her how to make a paper clay bird. After hours of fun accompanied by pizza and Coke, she sent me home with a cache of cool stuff we'd embossed, die-cut, etc. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Yesterday I dug into that lovely little basket of goodies and made this tag from some of the wonderful stuff she sent home with me.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is a manila tag that was embossed with a Tim Holtz embossing folder. I semi-dry brushed it orange then, using a baby wipe, smoothed brown over that to bring out the detail. Melissa has the Tim Holtz die to make the rosettes and we had made some of those plus we cut out some leaves from the same paper. Meanwhile, I purchased her Cuttlebug from her and have bought a Sizzix die of the same type of leaves. The "create" and "enjoy" word art is from a Scrap Girls digital kit and the rose is a plain white paper rose that I died with a diluted solution of Adirondack "Carmel" Alcohol Ink.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Today I received Happy Mail from Retro Cafe Art. Included in the box of goodies were 12 of the new Faux Faberge Egg kits. I will be making a few more Easter eggs within the next few days.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Meanwhile, Happy Crafting, everyone!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I know it's too early for Halloween, but I've got a ghost story for you.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As you may, or may not, know, we live in a nearly 100 year old house. It's a great house. Two-story. The upstairs is a complete 2-3 bedroom apartment with it's own kitchen and bath. Downstairs, where we live is two bedroom/two bath with really large rooms. Daniel bought this house with his ex-wife, Vicki, and has owned it for about 18 years. I moved in in 2002 and ever since I moved in, there has been a ghost.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
No one else hears it, feels it or is bothered by it except me. It's not malicious and seems to be caring and reassuring. I think I know who it is/was. It only "appears" in our master bedroom. The word "appears" is in quotes because I have never actually seen it. I sense it, I feel motion if it sits on the bed next to me and once I even heard him talking to me. Yes, the ghost is a man.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anyway, one morning Daniel got up around 7am and I was still sleepy and not ready to get out of bed. It was hot in the bedroom and he asked if I wanted him to turn the ceiling fan on. I mumbled "no" and groggily rolled over. About 3 to 5 minutes later, the ceiling fan came on. It was running on high speed which we never use. I looked up and around and didn't see or hear Daniel, so I got up and found him in the dining room. I asked him how come he turned the fan on and he said he didn't. I just looked at him and told him that it was on and running on high too. He came in the bedroom and checked for himself, and sure enough - fan on and running. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Daniel knew about all the ghostly encounters I'd had so we discussed what we should do. We came to the conclusion that I should have a talk with the ghost. So I turned off the fan, sat on my side of the bed and told the ghost I understood he was just trying to be helpful and that he cared for me. I recognized his concern and appreciated it, but truthfully, I weirded me out some.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After that "talk" the ghost went away for quite a while. No more sitting on the bed next to me while I was sleeping. No more talking to me in the wee hours of the morning. No more ceiling fan turning on.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Just recently, a ghost is back. I don't think it's the same one. I can tell by the movements and sounds it's a different ghost. It's not scary - well not a lot. Last night Daniel and I went to bed. I read for about an hour then turned the bedside light off. I was reading a paperback, but my Nook is on the nightstand, plugged in and these is a little green light that glows from the plug. Even if I'm so tired the book falls on my face, once I put it down I still have a hard time getting comfortable enough to fall asleep. I turned toward Daniel, then I turned back the other way, facing my night stand and as I did, I saw a shadow come between me and the light from the Nook charger. I was spooked some, but I thought, well the doors were open the other day, maybe a moth got in and was attracted to the light. Yeah, right, really big moth. I watched for a while, huddled under the covers, but didn't see anything else. Daniel was snoring and sleeping soundly and I didn't want to wake him up. Eventually, I drifted off to sleep.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
At 4:15 this morning something caused me to wake up. I could hear a strange sound, almost like running water. I lifted up on one elbow to hear more clearly and as I did, I felt Daniel get up from the bed. I said, "I hear a weird noise". He walked through the bedroom door into the next room and I could hear him walk down the hall. Of course it was dark and what I saw was a shadow of him walking out of the bedroom. I was tense, waiting for him to come back and report. Sheba and Shortie sleep between us every night and I could feel them next to my back under their blankets. Sheba was making little snuffly sounds and I turned around to pat her and there was Daniel. Fast asleep, in bed. He was making the snuffly sounds. I almost woke him up then, but he works so hard and he does have a hard time sleeping sometimes I just didn't want to wake him. I just laid back down with the covers up to my chin looking, watching, straining my ears for anymore noises. Nothing happened. Eventually, I went back to sleep.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When we both got up later this morning, I told him about what had happened. He got up earlier than I did this morning and he told me that when he walked past the kitchen he heard two distinct thumps like someone setting something heavy on the counter-top. He looked in the kitchen and didn't see anything, so just put it out of his thoughts until I told him my ghost story.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So there you have it. Our house, or maybe just me, is hainted! Am I scared? Not really, sometimes freaked out a bit, but it seems like a friendly ghost, at least a protective one, so I won't call an exorcist yet!</div>

OK, a bit trite, but so true. I can't believe it's been nearly 11 months since my last post. You wouldn't believe the stuff I've created over that time. Our summer was fairly mild for a Texas summer, but winter has been long and very cold for a Texas winter. I think the worst is behind us, but I never say never until after April because I've seen snow here in the D/FW area in April twice that I remember.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anyway, I'm going to attach some pictures of some of the things I've been making, especially new Easter creations.</div>

So there you go. I've been experimenting with paperclay and I think my little folk art birds turned out really cute. The bunny turned out well too. The Bun-Bun candy box and the green Tweety Bird box are gone as is the Easter Egg on the spool. Everything else is here sitting on a silver tray sparkling away. If you would like to buy any of these little goodies please let me know.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A couple of my creations have inspired Kristen Hubick of Retro Cafe Art- <a href="http://www.retrocafeart.com/">www.retrocafeart.com</a> -to make some cool kits for sale in her online store. The first item was my Bunny Theatre from last year. Kristen was inspired to create Angel and Fairy Shrine kits.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHqpM8yBlwrtB4El_mcdEvKVzPVtvEtcg1pGu7kmNqTxO_Z3PkuXCP7HMHYRoLkJ41__oZsNkhRKjRo0Rog1dU2LZo0gJxK0VlfCKdJeVsmUMavKybGz5ojRkvhe9_qlZ-s1DqOJovj5Q/s1600/Mlle+Lapin+di+Paques+1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHqpM8yBlwrtB4El_mcdEvKVzPVtvEtcg1pGu7kmNqTxO_Z3PkuXCP7HMHYRoLkJ41__oZsNkhRKjRo0Rog1dU2LZo0gJxK0VlfCKdJeVsmUMavKybGz5ojRkvhe9_qlZ-s1DqOJovj5Q/s1600/Mlle+Lapin+di+Paques+1.png" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The above inspired the below</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I feel lucky to have been able to inspire kits that so many others can enjoy "playing" with!</div>

First, Maria's(oldest Daughter) birthday on May 1st then on May 2nd, it's grand-daughter Bella's birthday. Next event is Mother's Day. After that we have Rachel's (#2 Daughter) birthday on the 21st, then mine on the 24th. After that it's Memorial Day weekend. Whew! <br />
<br />
If that flurry of family events wasn't enough, I have 4 swaps I have joined and they are all due in May! First is Kristin's Retro Cafe Art Mini House Shrine swap <a href="http://www.retrocafeart.com/pages/HouseSwap.htm">http://www.retrocafeart.com/pages/HouseSwap.htm</a>, then I have a Paper Doll swap, an ATC swap and a Tag swap! I've done the 4 mini house shrines for Kristin's swap, 5 of the 6 ATCs for the ATC swap, 1 out of 2 dolls for the paper doll swap and absolutely zero for the 3 tags I need to make for the tag swap. These three last swaps are with Roses on My Table art groups. <a href="http://rosesonmytable.ning.com/">http://rosesonmytable.ning.com/</a><br />

I don't have any pictures of the paper doll yet, or the other two Mini House Shrines. Hopefully I'll get a chance to photograph them before I've got to get them in the mail.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Right now, it's been taking me almost a whole day to find the inspiration and then create an ATC so I'm quickly running out of time to complete all these projects. Sometimes creativity is hard to come by, other times it's so easy. I just wonder why that is. I have quite a few other projects that I could work on that I've got great ideas for, but if I'm to get all of these done in time, I can't take the time to work on the ones I have ideas for. Guess that's what happens when the time crunch comes!</div>

Making Mlle. Lapin de Paques started a trend here. I became obsessed with making more Bunny Ladies. They turn out so cute! Below is a digital composition I created with three of my Bunny Ladies.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGmK2FhrgGkkumy6VDJx8bxfhGSTKvlvT4pCMkaZOpfKUMhz0l3xvaY54yOBLMk8EKGTRoBfYhc3Vhkrj0k-4fLQ7l2gjMHEbL9m0TgL1ajj3zrwiZ1XQ8wFVCxf4L8FV8bYvxRinFKIA/s1600/Mlles.+Lapins.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" psa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGmK2FhrgGkkumy6VDJx8bxfhGSTKvlvT4pCMkaZOpfKUMhz0l3xvaY54yOBLMk8EKGTRoBfYhc3Vhkrj0k-4fLQ7l2gjMHEbL9m0TgL1ajj3zrwiZ1XQ8wFVCxf4L8FV8bYvxRinFKIA/s400/Mlles.+Lapins.png" width="398" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Aren't they ever so elegant?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After these tree lovelies, I created a couple. Just had to when I discovered I had a rabbit head in a top hat at my disposal.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Introducing Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Hare, Newlyweds.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgWzTbhIaI4aKpJEMqRTFwHBNEq7Xsmz7zWPTv4gUT4uxz2enxiIi1lAp-HyoxBI7zOMeYm0JMYRJIRAaIhFqMubdDgy5lZ5ZfZhQ5sBhY3caSk6HMb9C2jGey4S_sw-TgsGLm_n1GDJI/s1600/Mr.and+Mrs.+E.B.+Hare.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" psa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgWzTbhIaI4aKpJEMqRTFwHBNEq7Xsmz7zWPTv4gUT4uxz2enxiIi1lAp-HyoxBI7zOMeYm0JMYRJIRAaIhFqMubdDgy5lZ5ZfZhQ5sBhY3caSk6HMb9C2jGey4S_sw-TgsGLm_n1GDJI/s320/Mr.and+Mrs.+E.B.+Hare.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, for the moment, I've gotten bunnies out of my bonnet and I decided to make another Owl Queen. Many thanks to Marsha and Tumblefish Studios for the body, crown and inspiration. The Queen's head is a finding of my own as well as the eyes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUlWsObwdNYNCGnwu03rgEceHdwyKLXBWPwCzE8Y8D5u9DBLDPKaGvrEhK3s_Z9O-dfhYF36tRu5uOF-R6joneOYPaGWWpcsX6ga0A-xmlE18O4YFSwgEfgj7u-AabkOSvOZozihrJMyE/s1600/Owl+Queen+2+w+background.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" psa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUlWsObwdNYNCGnwu03rgEceHdwyKLXBWPwCzE8Y8D5u9DBLDPKaGvrEhK3s_Z9O-dfhYF36tRu5uOF-R6joneOYPaGWWpcsX6ga0A-xmlE18O4YFSwgEfgj7u-AabkOSvOZozihrJMyE/s400/Owl+Queen+2+w+background.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lastly, but certainly not the last, is another Easter project. I made an Easter Parade wagon being pulled by twin lambs. The wagon is made from a 2 inch by 3 inch chipboard box and the wheels are 1 inch vintage mother of pearl buttons.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Well, I've done it again. I've let almost 2 months go by this time. So here's a belated Valentine for you from Owl Boy!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've been experimenting with different things. I tried journaling. That was a bust. So obviously not my thing. So I tried Art Dolls. Denise Phillips and Mary Jane Chadbourne make such lovely art dolls that I wanted to see what I could do. My first challenge was that I didn't have any wood, or foam core to work with, so I decided I would make a Paper Art Doll. Hence, Leticia was born.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikS-Lio5oYFeJKHFPHw6nBcgGZ-s3sfcAaD583lGKJkz2q6UEK1wU_guIXn2guCF708J6wI8eihj_2yfC1KiqATq2YLhoM9051A59iVCsANbDrkXpI0F6rML0p68Hc3agL7BfGlwNIrCw/s1600/Leticia.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" jsa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikS-Lio5oYFeJKHFPHw6nBcgGZ-s3sfcAaD583lGKJkz2q6UEK1wU_guIXn2guCF708J6wI8eihj_2yfC1KiqATq2YLhoM9051A59iVCsANbDrkXpI0F6rML0p68Hc3agL7BfGlwNIrCw/s400/Leticia.gif" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I personally think she turned out just lovely. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After Leticia, I just had to make another. Here's Kathleen, the Kitchen Queen.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZsr3_QW9VgZzqE_4RTdA1ClGg3ywEh4LEUvLo8c4ZVD-Q4hV52kg7OY5nQ0PnErbAi8-POJ2cjQQ1ZAQkaLsMQE4RIVhzk3mFp5iPkI1fkT0PI1lGQiz70mgZfp3jdfcpuaLd1Syxri0/s1600/100_3066.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" jsa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZsr3_QW9VgZzqE_4RTdA1ClGg3ywEh4LEUvLo8c4ZVD-Q4hV52kg7OY5nQ0PnErbAi8-POJ2cjQQ1ZAQkaLsMQE4RIVhzk3mFp5iPkI1fkT0PI1lGQiz70mgZfp3jdfcpuaLd1Syxri0/s400/100_3066.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Kathleen look genuinely perplexed as she tries to figure out what to cook for dinner.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, I got the Art Dolls out of my system for a bit. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Another one of my Facebook friends/artists, Nancy Gene Armstrong inspired me with her Miss Bunny projects. I decided I needed to have a Miss Bunny too. So, using Retro Cafe Art's medium theatre shrine, I invented Mlle. Lapin de Paques.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-AS371S_5bpf_Jp-MuunB4mvx-n-Uvm2GgByvVMSo94cLkEL40xMMoBnONStjCmPr4wEwE3e1LDdbQi3quTg1y4XiUgcxLZOgjMdOkMNI3dsBEUpUZ7GY92bgKgZV1-vwHb_newNINPQ/s1600/Mlle+Lapin+di+Paques+1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" jsa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-AS371S_5bpf_Jp-MuunB4mvx-n-Uvm2GgByvVMSo94cLkEL40xMMoBnONStjCmPr4wEwE3e1LDdbQi3quTg1y4XiUgcxLZOgjMdOkMNI3dsBEUpUZ7GY92bgKgZV1-vwHb_newNINPQ/s400/Mlle+Lapin+di+Paques+1.png" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I really love her, and she may result in a spin off of Owl Boy with Fille Lapin. Lovely rabbit girls. We'll see.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lastly, for today, here is my Irish Owl Boy, Owl O'Boyo.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSBGAYIa9HkHeZqgmmO90ti5s1R7hKnmZjkCwd4rO5YL5chbaFkEK7c3CLjBpur_Tkgem4L-I_yr8m3fMoaLSP-2BkwIEK3FK_vWsi4yYTMNAW8i6b_liurn1yQ0ux-PxRvjyy1GXKMNU/s1600/Owl+O%2527Boyo.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" jsa="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSBGAYIa9HkHeZqgmmO90ti5s1R7hKnmZjkCwd4rO5YL5chbaFkEK7c3CLjBpur_Tkgem4L-I_yr8m3fMoaLSP-2BkwIEK3FK_vWsi4yYTMNAW8i6b_liurn1yQ0ux-PxRvjyy1GXKMNU/s400/Owl+O%2527Boyo.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Well, back to creating more weird and wonderful stuff. Hope you enjoy.</div>
<br />

One of the swaps is for heart-shaped chipboard book pages. Each person entering the swap, gets 4 book pages to decorate as they wish. Once they are complete, they are mailed back to Kristin and she sends you back 4 pages from 4 different artists. The four you have decorated also go out to 4 different artists. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is the same way the ATC swaps go and it's so much fun. Kristin also did this with the chipboard Christmas ornaments. I got 4 of the most lovely ornaments from 4 terrific artists. They are all unique and reflect the artist's style and tastes. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCFtM9K4aW63zPY2kD8RfozKH9KZrB8X3S-sCtoAogwlXkVvUS93X4IPtkbNCBuRYbDkEOhD64xt8ZXNMmdyzYPQO-B6U7NFB8-sr2izE7NE-X7fSNPUqmTVhnuaVnq3klm2T2FFNLxtg/s1600/100_3037.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCFtM9K4aW63zPY2kD8RfozKH9KZrB8X3S-sCtoAogwlXkVvUS93X4IPtkbNCBuRYbDkEOhD64xt8ZXNMmdyzYPQO-B6U7NFB8-sr2izE7NE-X7fSNPUqmTVhnuaVnq3klm2T2FFNLxtg/s400/100_3037.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><span style="color: orange; font-size: large;">The fronts</span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used vintage Harrison Fisher images for my 4 book pages. I have a beautiful little book of Harrison Fisher prints that was given to my Grandmother Rachel back in 1914. It has always fascinated me and I've been digitally collecting more of his prints for quite a while. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj63W5jY4XzPmntOTy0WjLmQbFsm7ekKX53XB4brOhba7QmXlmhp08dHPRIrgFZjSmPzRxvU5vFp5Wp3hR5vizZM5NjJfbTcjPepKLKHuZc2-oEbKwdPSJMVhHTLB1Hz0g5NRJusg8rBHc/s1600/100_3040.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj63W5jY4XzPmntOTy0WjLmQbFsm7ekKX53XB4brOhba7QmXlmhp08dHPRIrgFZjSmPzRxvU5vFp5Wp3hR5vizZM5NjJfbTcjPepKLKHuZc2-oEbKwdPSJMVhHTLB1Hz0g5NRJusg8rBHc/s400/100_3040.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: orange; font-size: large;"><b>The backs</b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And you know me, I can't stand a "bare" back on any of my projects. So the back of the pages are decorated to the nth degree as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hope you like. I'll be posting pictures of the ATCs I'm creating for the same Valentine's Day swap. And please visit Kristin's website. She has the most amazing things to use in making altered art.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm working on Valentine's things at the moment, but before I have them finished, I thought I'd offer a January calendar for you to download, print and use. Oh, I know, it's already January 11th, but what the heck! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Meanwhile, I've been struggling with asthma. I really have no idea why it's acting up again (it IS cedar season though and that could have something to do with it) but I know that I wake up early (for me) every morning wheezing. Right now I've got the Albuterol jitters since I just gave myself a breathing treatment. For the past few days I've had to do a treatment at least once and sometimes twice a day. The dogs get scared by the vapor coming out of the mouthpiece. I guess they think I've turned into a vapor-breathing dragon!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My wonderful husband will be on vacation for 5 whole days starting late next week and we plan on visiting my parental units down in the Hill Country. It will be nice to just get out of town for a bit. Nothing big planned, but I'm sure we'll have to make a trip to Fredericksburg and Wimberly and maybe to a winery or three.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'll be posting pics of my Valentine's Day projects soon!</div>
<br />Virginiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10160297504664448939noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4082454315445717657.post-59395275731139952592012-12-19T12:49:00.003-08:002012-12-19T12:49:46.380-08:00Christmas CraftsOnce again I've almost let 2 months slip away without a post. But honestly, I've been busy. Really. My last post was on Halloween and I was already working on Christmas crafts. I entered an ATC swap with Denise Phillips and then Kristin Hubick of Retro Cafe Art hosted an ornament swap. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUqqgw1GkVhfK7Srhur38JYWW8NV6m_7PJzJ-wZTTp4LuDM9G3qNBzpVxdvLj6tzXB9fFwPTKCpXfDqxA5TjmoJiGQ_FW8BHWmGsyCT_rDOjI_b_Hk4yfn2CHqIG7mG6Bwklt_1LBjhfg/s1600/Christmas+Ornament+Swap.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" eea="true" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUqqgw1GkVhfK7Srhur38JYWW8NV6m_7PJzJ-wZTTp4LuDM9G3qNBzpVxdvLj6tzXB9fFwPTKCpXfDqxA5TjmoJiGQ_FW8BHWmGsyCT_rDOjI_b_Hk4yfn2CHqIG7mG6Bwklt_1LBjhfg/s400/Christmas+Ornament+Swap.jpg" width="298" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These are the ornaments I sent in for the swap. I recieved four ornaments back, each from different artists. They are all amazing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then Mom asked me to make a large triptych for Margo Perez-Greene as a gift. You may or may not know that Margo is the wife of Ken Greene, pastor of Blanco United Methodist Church, which is the church that Mom and Dad attend when they are in Blanco. In her own right, Margo is an ordained minister and also recieved her PhD earlier this year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Mom wanted me to use an Icon from St. Catherine's Monastery since we had all been there back in January.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFsk3JZ0ccsebffMxGf2vRnRVkBisnFjKhzRIHy6-rXiaobIVpkNJlujj6fA6eeFMpJb0fHv8k28YroXKKt4jAWXWltra1Q_0Qu9jDmJ3CXSaevVxEOiTTzgqGFkRIwRi8mn8XZLVVBbQ/s1600/Byzantine+Icon+Shrine.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" eea="true" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFsk3JZ0ccsebffMxGf2vRnRVkBisnFjKhzRIHy6-rXiaobIVpkNJlujj6fA6eeFMpJb0fHv8k28YroXKKt4jAWXWltra1Q_0Qu9jDmJ3CXSaevVxEOiTTzgqGFkRIwRi8mn8XZLVVBbQ/s400/Byzantine+Icon+Shrine.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is the shrine that I made. I asked Mom to call me and let me know how Margo liked it but instead Margo herself called me to tell me how much she liked it. Mom said that when she opened it, Margo was just speechless. Boy, that sure made me feel good.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My last Christmas project for this year was for myself. I had purchased a little papier mache box that was shaped like a house a couple of years ago. I always meant to make a Snow Village House out of it, but never had. This year I decided it was time. It was a lot of work, but well worth it. Since the lid (roof) comes off I can put a battery powered tea light inside it to make it look welcoming and cheery. There was no door, just an opening, so I made a door. I put velum on the inside of the windows to make the panes and used almost a whole jar of SnowTex! Before all that it took three layers of paint. It was messy, but the end result is so cute. I hope I can find some more of these boxes so that I can add to my "village" for next year.</div>

Last, but not least, I've been playing around with my digital graphics and made several pictures to post on Facebook or wherever. There's a new Christmas Owl Boy (coming soon, a Valentine Owl Boy), a Christmas Greeting from Sheba and Shorty and just another little picture I did for the heck of it.</div>

With Christmas only a week away, I'm concentrating now on just getting the house ready for the family. This includes no fun stuff such as polishing the silver and washing all the wine and champagne glasses, dusting, etc. Yech! But it has to be done.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'll be back next year with Valentine's Day crafts. I've already enterd an ATC swap and a book page swap sponsored by Retro Cafe Art. I"m waiting to see what Denise will propose for January or February as well.</div>

Oh, I know, today's Halloween and I've been working on Christmas stuff for a couple of weeks now. But you know how it goes...time flies..or flys..or something like that. Anyway, it seems that everyone is already in Christmas mode and I did want to have some ornaments made by Thanksgiving to offer to my family members.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The ATC above is for the last ATC Swap of the year with Denise Phillips. Denise lives on Victoria island in British Columbia, Canada. She's a waaayyyy talented artist and we've become Facebook "pals" and appreciators of each other's art since this summer. Check out her blog at: <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: #3d85c6;">http://www.birdnutsmixedmedia.blogspot.com/</span></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These were blank paper mache ornaments I purchased from Hobby Lobby. Above is the front and back of one of my favorite ones.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here's another ornament made from blank paper mache. I posted this on Facebook not too long ago and someone wanted to know what Santa was smoking since he looked sort of dazed. Well, I can't say for sure what he's smoking, but hopefully it's something relaxing..I mean, wouldn't you need to relax if you were living with all those elves?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And last, but not least, this one is made from the lid of a paper mache box. I use the boxes to make lighted "shrines" and vignettes so I end up with a lot of extra lids. Can't have those go to waste now can I?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Stay tuned. There will be plenty more Christmas stuff showing up here now that I'm on a roll.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The first project featured here is "Dr. Raven's Medicine Bag". This was inspired by an altered Altoid tin book made by Laura Carson that you can see here: <a href="http://artfullymusing.blogspot.com/2012/09/mini-apothecary-in-altoids-tin-book.html">http://artfullymusing.blogspot.com/2012/09/mini-apothecary-in-altoids-tin-book.html</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I had a chipboard purse book that I had started out making into a travel case book and never got around to finishing, so I cut a couple of pages out of it in order to make the bag. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When the bag is opened, you find the Altoids tin inside complete with a stuffed "Raven"! </div>

Opening up the Altoids tin you will find all of Dr. Raven's potions and poisons ready for mixing your own special elixer. These tiny bottles are from Tim Holtz and I found them at Michael's. You can also get them at Hobby Lobby. Remember, these are all inside a regular Altoids tin. I "found" or fabricated my own labels for the bottles and filled them with different colors of glitter.</div>

Next, I was invited to join an ATC swap sponsored by Denise Phillips of Birdnuts Mixed Media Studio. You can see her blog here: <a href="http://birdnutsmixedmedia.blogspot.com/">http://birdnutsmixedmedia.blogspot.com/</a></div>

This is "Owl Boy". He is my own creation. I'm very proud of him. Just love his attitude. And the Trick or Treat bag...I made that out of a paper sack and some twine. I've got some great little ATC's and other goodies to share with you. First of all, Kristin Hubrick over at Retro Cafe Art is having an ATC swap for Halloween. Check out her website and see all her new goodies and read about the swap! <a href="http://www.retrocafeart.com/">http://www.retrocafeart.com/</a> I made all of the following ATC's using the masonite Tombstone ATC blanks.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Besides Halloween I have made a few other things. The next pictures are of a "book" made with the bottom halves of 2 Altoid tins. I did this one in a Steampunk theme. Thanks to Dad for letting me raid his collection of washers, resistors a capacitors! The covers of the book are chipboard that I covered in paper. I then stained the edges with chalk ink. Before I glued them onto the tins, I glued the ribbon in place that ties the books shut. I also used carmel Adirondack alcohol ink to stain the washers before assembling the piece.</div>

Next are two canvas books I made. The first one, The Little Mermaid, I made using a standard sized ATC card (2 1/2 x 3 1/2) and an ATC sized painters canvas. For the second, The Bird Nest, I used a 3 x 3 inch painters canvas and cut the cover from some chipboard. I found these small canvas' at Michaels. For the Little Mermaid I once again used the Adirondack alcohol ink to stain the hinges to give them a more antiqued look. I wish I could remember where I got these hinges because I have several more canvases and want to make more of these.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I read a book yesterday titled "The Age of Miracles". Once I finished reading it I felt the title was peculiar because there was certainly no miracle for the characters in the book. The premise of the book was that the rotation of the earth gradually slowed down and how this "slowing" effected the people in a particular Californian neighborhood. Needless to say, it was bad. But one of the effects was that because the rotation slowed so significantly by the end of the book,days were 72 hours long and nights were 72 hours long. Because the sun stayed "up" longer, the climate changed so that the temperatures became increasingly high and eventually, no one could go outside during the daylight hours because of the heat and exposure to radiation and the killer sun. Needless to say there was no "fix" to the problem and eventually life on Earth ceased to exist.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I told Daniel last night after I finished the book that I felt somewhat how those people must have felt during those 72 hour days. This summer my allergies, especially my asthma, has been so bad I hardly go outside and this past week, with temps way over 100 (like 107, 106, 105, etc.), it's just too darn hot to even open the front or back door just to peek out. In order to cut down on our energy use and keep the house as cool as I need it, I keep the living room closed off until around 6PM and I have as few lights on as possible. Because of the way this old house is built, there really aren't a lot of windows, so the dining room area is pretty dark and the bedrooms are very dark as well. Therefore, I feel like I'm living in a cave unless I'm here in the office looking out my window at 12th Street.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Yesterday, Daniel had to be at work at 5AM. He got home around 3PM and he went to lie down in the spare bedroom, so the puppies and I decided to nap in the master bedroom. By the time we all got back up it was 5:30PM. I worked in my office some more, and we finally opened the living room up around 7PM to watch TV. Since the living room faces east and we have a large, covered front porch, the living room is fairly dim without lights by 3PM anyway. So by 7PM we had to turn on some lights in the living room even though there was still light outside. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
By the time I went to bed around midnight, I felt as though yesterday had been 72 hours long and I'd been in a cave all day. I was tired, depressed, grumpy, etc.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I know it's summer in Texas, but I wish these super hot days would just go away. I need to be able to go outside for just a little bit without melting or feeling like my skin is going to spontaneously catch fire!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Maybe I should forgo weird Science Fiction books for a while too!</div>Virginiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10160297504664448939noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4082454315445717657.post-21265448131500735712012-07-03T13:09:00.001-07:002012-07-03T13:09:45.550-07:00Parisian Beauties Contest<div style="text-align: center;">

Here’s a very interesting story about these scrolls: When
the Bedouins found the first scrolls in the first cave in 1947, they were not
sure what to do with them. They took
them to one antiquities dealer who told them that they were worthless and that
he thought they had been stolen from a synagogue. Undaunted, the Bedouins took them to a nearby
market where a Syrian Christian offered to purchase them. An Arab joined the conversation and suggested
that they take the scrolls to Kahlil Eskander Shahin, otherwise known as Kando,
who was a cobbler and a part time
antiques dealer. Kando initially
purchased one scroll and helped the Bedouins sell three others for a pittance
of what we now know of their worth.
Kando, however, was honest and helpful to them and they continued to do
business with him at his shop in Bethlehem.
This shop is now owned by the son and grandson of Kando and it was in
this shop that most of our group purchased our exquisite, handmade Jerusalem
crosses and Olive wood figurines. The
Kando family are Arabic Christians, otherwise known as Palestinians. Also in their shop is an original amorpha that
held some of the scrolls and a few small scroll fragments on display. There are also many photographs displayed of
Kando with political and religious leaders.
These were mainly taken in his old age when his foresight into helping
save the scrolls was more thoroughly acknowledged. </div>

largest permanent collection of Dead Sea Scrolls in the United States. They have eight scrolls which Seminary
President Paige Patterson and his wife, Dorothy, purchased directly from Kando. <span style="background-color: white;">The elaborate display will include the Genesis 37-38 fragment, which is owned
by the Kando family of Bethlehem and is considered to be the largest Dead Sea
Scroll segment held by a private collector. Five other major fragments will also
be on display, including Genesis 33, 1 Kings 13:22-22, Isaiah 28:23-29, Amos
7:17- 8:1 and Joel 3:9-10.</span></div>

Our group also travelled to the Qumran site. They have a small museum where you sit and
watch a film on the finding of the scrolls and where afterward you can meander
through the museum then out into pathways through the “dig” itself. It was quite overcast, windy, cool and stark
when we were there and I didn’t get many pictures and their quality isn’t the
greatest ever, but I’ve included a picture of one of the caves where the scrolls were found.. </div>

The students at Southwest have put together a replica of the
Qumran site and “stocked” it with actual antique pot sherds. As part of the tour you are invited to have
your own “dig” and see what treasure you discover. If you just want to “dig” and not see the
exhibit you can purchase a ticket for the dig only for $10.00.</div>Virginiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10160297504664448939noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4082454315445717657.post-85477447427365431882012-04-06T10:48:00.000-07:002012-04-06T10:48:46.342-07:00Artsy Fartsy<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkzbDqW8LzKeh_7oSn0iAvt8EiFeUL9T40crlsB70B4_dLIfGGNy9Diqf8By7PBpHYvf6ykKczGU_3jX3Ltms0ZPJOPsNRvRYNNBQhqYo0bLXUt-7cP9Qb37leXQNE1kb8Jqe2tXnHPik/s1600/100_2797.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" nda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkzbDqW8LzKeh_7oSn0iAvt8EiFeUL9T40crlsB70B4_dLIfGGNy9Diqf8By7PBpHYvf6ykKczGU_3jX3Ltms0ZPJOPsNRvRYNNBQhqYo0bLXUt-7cP9Qb37leXQNE1kb8Jqe2tXnHPik/s400/100_2797.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

I got this idea from a blog that I follow and if you need creative ideas, check it out. <a href="http://www.alphastamps.com/blog/">http://www.alphastamps.com/blog/</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

I wondered if they stayed up all year round since this was Bethlehem after all, or if they hadn’t gotten around to taking them down. Before we went to our hotel we went to the Church of the Nativity and I found out why the decorations were still up. There were crowds of people at the church and Samir told us that the 17th of January was when the Armenian Christians celebrated Christmas. I knew that the Greek Orthodox celebrated on January 7th, but didn’t realize that there was another Christmas celebration after that. There was a TV crew broadcasting outside of the church and the crew was speaking Armenian. We went into the church, but services were being held in the Armenian quarter of it and other parts of the church were being cleaned. The line to go into the Grotto of the Nativity was very long and Samir determined that it would take us hours to get through it. </span><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">By this time everyone was tired, cold and it was getting dark. It was decided to go on to our hotel, get checked in, have dinner and go back to the church on another day. Our hotel “Holy Family Hotel” was nice. It wasn’t a 4 or 5 star hotel by any means, but the rooms were clean. The dining room was in the basement, which was sort of weird and it turned out that we were the only group at the hotel the entire time we were there.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The next day, we went to Nablus to see Jacob's well that is within the Greek Orthodox Church of St.Photina</span><br />

I could not get the blog to cooperate with me and keep the font of the last two paragraphs the same as the rest. Sometimes, this thing has a mind of it's own. <div style="text-align: left;">We checked out of our hotel in Amman and got all our luggage loaded on the bus. We were headed back to Israel, but first, we would go to Jerash. Jerash, originally called Gerasa, is considered one of the most important and best preserved Roman cities in the Middle East. It is also where Jesus cast the demons into the herd of swine. </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi96fNGfqvu55IDb1tBCk-h67fNNhKMU5gSeZBDd7M-6MVuxASQ4-bNuFJ4j_brIoZ92fEsESysL9gDodnYJ2E4CDpJJpTOYLj6HyjXaKoHKFCaZzf9In23S3VAj7E7pbmet964Qm3z46o/s1600/100_2590.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi96fNGfqvu55IDb1tBCk-h67fNNhKMU5gSeZBDd7M-6MVuxASQ4-bNuFJ4j_brIoZ92fEsESysL9gDodnYJ2E4CDpJJpTOYLj6HyjXaKoHKFCaZzf9In23S3VAj7E7pbmet964Qm3z46o/s400/100_2590.jpg" width="400" yda="true" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;">The interesting thing about the ruins is that they are surrounded by the city of Jerash, which is about 48 miles north of Amman. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I had assumed that the bagpipes came to Jordan from the British Army some time in the past. It was weird seeing and hearing bagpipes in the Middle East and while in Amman I had noticed a few music stores selling bagpipes. So before I started this post, I looked up bagpipes in Jordan. Guess what I found out? Bagpipes actually originated in the Middle East. There is an Assyrian stone carving, now in the British Museum, from 800BC showing a man playing bagpipes and there are other ancient carvings and paintings illustrating the playing of bagpipes from other areas of the Middle East. Bagpipes have been played in the Middle East for 3000 years! Who knew? Obviously, not me.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">After the Jordanian musicians had performed, Sari sang for us. Sari has a lovely mezzo-soprano voice and the accoustics in the ampitheatre amplified her voice wonderfully.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
